The United Nations warns of escalating violence and impunity in Nigeria.

UN warns of deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions

The United Nations has warned that continued violence and escalating impunity in Nigeria are contributing to growing fears and perceptions of acts that could amount to genocide, amid increasing deadly attacks targeting civilians in several Nigerian states.

These warnings came during a visit by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to Nigeria, where she held a series of meetings with government officials, religious leaders and civil society representatives to discuss the security and humanitarian situation in the country.

Attacks escalate in several areas

In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed an increase in violence linked to armed groups and extremist organizations, along with conflicts between farmers and herders, kidnappings, and attacks on villages and local communities.

These attacks have resulted in thousands of casualties and the displacement of large numbers of people, especially in the northern and central states of the country, which has increased concerns about the humanitarian and security situation.

In recent months, some areas have also witnessed deadly attacks targeting villages and local communities, leading to increased calls for more effective measures to protect civilians.

Impunity exacerbates the crisis

The United Nations stressed that the lack of accountability and the failure to bring perpetrators of violence to justice contribute to an increased sense of injustice and a loss of trust in institutions, which leads to widespread fears about the targeting of specific groups or communities.

UN officials stressed the need for transparent and independent investigations into the recent attacks and for holding those responsible to account, in order to strengthen the rule of law and restore trust between citizens and state institutions.

Controversy over the characterization of the crisis

The use of the term “genocide” to describe some acts of violence in Nigeria has sparked widespread debate among political and human rights circles. While some organizations believe that the nature of the repeated attacks against specific groups warrants alarm, others consider the Nigerian crisis to be more complex, involving intertwined security, ethnic, religious, and economic factors.

Experts emphasize that the challenges facing Nigeria require a comprehensive approach that includes security, development, and social aspects, in addition to addressing the root causes of local conflicts, extremism, and violence.

Calls to strengthen national reconciliation

The United Nations called on Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to protect civilians and promote justice and accountability, as well as to support national reconciliation initiatives and community dialogue.
