500 tons of Egyptian wheat seeds support food security in Senegal

Khaled Aref, the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Republic of Senegal, met with Dr. Cheikho Omar Ba, Minister Agriculture Food sovereignty and livestock in the Republic of Senegal, to discuss pushing the areas of bilateral cooperation towards broader horizons that fulfill the aspirations of the two brotherly countries in development and food sovereignty.

The Ambassador began the meeting by congratulating the Minister on assuming his position, praising his distinguished career and extensive experience, particularly during his previous chairmanship of the “Initiative for Agricultural and Rural Foresight” (IPAR) and his chairmanship of the Network of Think Tanks in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), a period that witnessed close and fruitful cooperation with the Embassy.

The ambassador also expressed his deep appreciation for the minister’s presence as a guest of honor at the embassy’s celebration of the National Day of the Arab Republic of Egypt, which reflects the depth of the fraternal ties that unite the two countries.

During the talks, the two sides discussed the tangible success achieved by wheat cultivation in Senegal using Egyptian seed varieties that have proven highly suitable for the Senegalese climate.

To confirm this support, the ambassador announced Egypt’s readiness to allocate 500 tons of high-quality wheat seeds to Senegal for 2026, stressing the importance of logistical planning for the new season to ensure that shipments are delivered on time.

The two sides also reviewed prospects for establishing a strong partnership in the field of water infrastructure, with the meeting focusing on leveraging the leading role of major Egyptian companies that possess proven international expertise in implementing water transfer and management projects, and exploring ways to transfer this expertise to implement similar vital projects in Senegal.

At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to activate and develop joint research and scientific cooperation between the Agricultural Research Center in Egypt (ARC) and the Senegalese Institute for Agricultural Research (ISRA) to exchange experiences and develop agricultural technologies that meet the challenges of climate change.

The meeting also discussed ways to provide high-quality seeds for other strategic crops such as potatoes and cotton, in addition to confirming Egypt’s readiness to secure the needs of its brothers in Senegal for high-quality fertilizers and to determine the formulas and compositions suitable for Senegalese soil.
