The Zimbabwean government has approved a $3 billion project to build a light rail network in the capital, Harare, in what is considered one of the largest investments in the country's urban transport sector in decades.

The new network will connect Harare’s central business district with the main suburbs, Chitungwiza town, Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, and the new town of Mount Hampden.

The project is planned to be implemented in five phases through public-private partnerships, as part of a plan aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving the efficiency of urban transport, and supporting urban and economic development in the capital.
