Kidney disease and health coverage top parliamentary debates in Chad

The Health Committee is discussing improving dialysis services and expanding coverage.

The Health Committee of the Chadian National Assembly discussed with the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Abdul Majid Abdul Rahim, the most prominent challenges facing the health sector in the country, and the ways to improve the quality of health services and enhance citizens’ access to medical care.

This came during a working session chaired by the head of the National Assembly’s Health Committee, Abdul Rahman Jasnabay, in the presence of officials from the two institutions and a number of their assistants, where an important part of the discussions was devoted to the reality of kidney diseases, which have become one of the most prominent health challenges in the country.

During the meeting, the Minister of Public Health gave a presentation on the state of the health sector, reviewing the capabilities available in health institutions, the level of human resources working in the field, the number of patients benefiting from dialysis services, in addition to the technical and logistical needs required to launch a national kidney transplant program.

For their part, members of the Health Committee raised a number of issues related to the establishment of a specialized kidney transplant unit, enhancing the capabilities of medical staff, reducing waiting times at dialysis centers, as well as improving access to health services for residents in remote and isolated areas.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of accelerating efforts to enhance the capabilities of dialysis centers, improve mechanisms for caring for kidney patients, and move forward with the implementation of the comprehensive health coverage program and mobilize the necessary resources to support the health sector.

The two parties also agreed to establish a permanent consultation mechanism between the National Assembly and the Ministry of Public Health, with the aim of strengthening coordination and following up on priority issues in the health field.
