Cooperation between Sudan and Morocco in the field of water resources management and irrigation systems development

Sudan’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Professor Ismat Qureshi, discussed with Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, ways to enhance joint technical cooperation between the two countries in the areas of water resources management and irrigation, during a high-level bilateral meeting held today in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.

The meeting was attended by specialists in the irrigation and water sectors from both countries. The Sudanese delegation included, in addition to the Minister, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Engineer Daw Al-Bait Abdulrahman, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to the Kingdom of Morocco, Ms. Mawada Omar Haj Al-Toumi. On the Moroccan side, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Equipment and Water and a number of senior officials and experts participated.

The depth of relations between Sudan and Morocco

Professor Ismat Qureshi emphasized the deep fraternal relations that bind Sudan and Morocco, praising the Moroccan experience in managing dams, harvesting water, and modern technologies used in agricultural irrigation, expressing Sudan’s aspiration to benefit from these experiences to support efforts to develop the agriculture and irrigation sectors.

The minister pointed to the importance of the results reached by the experts’ meeting that preceded the meeting of the two ministers, which addressed a number of strategic issues, including governance and management of water resources, development of water infrastructure, flood risk management, digital transformation and modernization of irrigation systems, in addition to academic cooperation and capacity building.

For his part, the Moroccan Minister of Equipment and Water, Mr. Nizar Baraka, affirmed the strength of bilateral relations between the two countries, announcing Morocco’s readiness to share its expertise and experiences in the field of water resources with Sudan, in a way that contributes to supporting development efforts and achieving mutual benefit.

At the conclusion of the talks, the two sides agreed to prepare a legal framework for cooperation in the field of water resources management, and to work towards signing it as soon as possible, in addition to organizing a visit by Moroccan experts to Sudan, which will enhance the strategic partnership between the two countries and push technical cooperation to broader horizons.
