The statements of the official spokesperson for the Delta State Police sparked controversy. NigerianBright Edavi sparked widespread controversy after commenting on the viral video showing the killing of a suspect by a police officer, asserting that the leadership has no clear explanation for what happened, and indicating that the incident still seems incomprehensible.

Edavi's remarks came during a live interview with Channels Television today, in which he addressed the incident described as an extrajudicial killing. the lawThe incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, while elements of the Ivoron District Command were carrying out a report from citizens regarding a suspect.

A package suspected of containing a gun

According to the official statement issued by the police command, the victim, named Min Ogedi, aged 28, was arrested while attempting to ship a package suspected of containing a Beretta pistol and four bullets.

The police explained that they sent a security team to the site to take legal action and arrest the suspect.

However, according to reports, events took a sudden turn when the officer in charge of the team, Assistant Inspector Noah Usman, fired his weapon at the suspect, a move that police said was a clear violation of Force Order 237, as well as a breach of standard operating procedures adopted within the Nigerian police.

 

Bright Idavi confirmed that the incident caused a major shock within the security establishment, explaining that leadership is still searching for the officer's true motive. He said this incident was one of the most difficult he has faced since taking over public relations six years ago, adding that what happened cannot be easily explained.

The officer involved was arrested immediately.

The spokesman noted that the police could not officially attribute the incident to irrational or psychological motives, but he explained that the absence of any clear explanation led some to suggest different possibilities to understand what happened, given the strangeness of the officer's behavior.

In dealing with the case, the Delta State Police Command announced the immediate arrest of the officer involved and his transfer to the capital, Abuja, to complete the investigations and take the necessary disciplinary and legal measures against him.

The video circulating received widespread attention on social media and media platforms, sparking a wave of anger and demands to hold those responsible for the incident accountable, and to open a transparent investigation that ensures justice is served.

For its part, the Nigerian police force stressed that it will not tolerate any abuses or violations committed by its members, affirming its full commitment to enforcing the law and respecting citizens’ rights, and pursuing the case in accordance with applicable judicial procedures.

The incident once again highlights the issue of the use of force by some security agencies in Nigeria, amid growing calls for broader reforms including training, accountability and institutional oversight.
