From Cairo to Cape Town: A new boost for economic integration between Egypt and South Africa

Strengthening cooperation between African countries

As part of economic diplomacy efforts aimed at strengthening cooperation between African countries, the South African embassy held a meeting.  Africa In Egypt, a bilateral meeting was held with the Egyptian side at the headquarters of the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the southern side.  African Both Mohammed Abdul, the embassy's political advisor, and Thabo Sanyani, the first secretary for political affairs, along with Abeer Abu El-Enein, marketing officer at the South African Ministry of Trade, Industry and Competition.

On the Egyptian side, Ahmed Tarek Fawzy, the commercial advisor at the Egyptian Trade Representation Authority affiliated with the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade, was present.

Examining the reality of economic relations and their development

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the current state of bilateral economic relations between Egypt and South Africa, as the two largest economies in the African continent, stressing the importance of raising the level of trade and investment cooperation between the two countries.

The need to expand bilateral and multilateral economic cooperation in strategic sectors was also discussed, in order to contribute to strengthening continental economic integration.

Expected agreements and boosting trade

The meeting addressed the issue of finalizing the bilateral economic agreements under negotiation, in addition to emphasizing the importance of coordinating joint efforts between the two sides to support and expand the volume of trade and mutual investments.

The need to capitalize on the opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) was also emphasized, as it is a key platform for promoting intra-African trade.

Cape Town-Cairo vision for African integration

The meeting concluded by emphasizing the importance of implementing the African Union’s economic integration agenda, through supporting the “Cape Town-Cairo” economic corridor project, which is seen as one of the most important trade and logistics connectivity projects between the north and south of the continent, thus enhancing the flow of goods, services and investments within a unified continental framework.

Strengthening partnerships amidst global economic transformations

During the meeting, both sides stressed that the current stage of the global economy necessitates building more cohesive African partnerships capable of facing challenges, including disruptions to supply chains and changes in international markets.

Both sides stressed that strengthening cooperation between Egypt and South Africa is not limited to increasing the volume of trade exchange, but extends to include technology transfer, support for joint investments, and facilitating the movement of capital, in order to achieve mutual benefit and enhance the position of the African continent as an influential economic player on the global stage.
