Ahmed Salem

The Central Bank of Sudan, through its Electronic Banking Services Company (EBS), announced the completion of a comprehensive upgrade of the interbank financial transfer platform using the Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN), as part of the program to modernize the national infrastructure for digital payments and enhance the readiness of banking systems.

The bank explained that the (BBAN) platform is the only national platform that allows the implementation of financial transfers between Sudanese banks, and currently connects 26 banks through a central network that provides a secure operating environment, making it one of the main components of the payments system in Sudan.

Updating the platform's technical infrastructure

The director of the electronic banking services company, Saif Al-Din Hassan Ahmed Bari, said that the development work included updating the technical infrastructure of the platform and moving to a more advanced operating environment, which enhances operational flexibility, increases the platform’s ability to expand, and improves business continuity, while maintaining high performance levels in conjunction with the increase in transaction volume.

He added that the project also included strengthening the cybersecurity system, developing data protection mechanisms and securing communications between banking systems, in addition to improving the speed of transaction processing and reducing response time, which contributes to raising the reliability of the service, reducing operational risks, and ensuring the continuity of its efficient provision during peak periods, according to what was reported by the Sudanese “Al-Mashhad” website.

“Bari” pointed out that the development of the platform represents a step towards building a more flexible banking infrastructure that can be integrated with financial technology solutions in the future, which supports efforts to modernize the Sudanese banking sector and keep pace with global developments in the field of digital payments.

According to the data released, the number of transactions executed through the (BBAN) platform during the years 2025 and 2026 exceeded 234 million transactions, indicating the growing reliance of Sudanese banks on the platform in carrying out financial transfers between banks.
