A new health project to boost specialized care in Zambia

The government announced Zambia Construction of the Livingston Cancer Hospital has officially commenced, in a move aimed at developing specialized healthcare services and expanding access to cancer treatment within the country.

During the inauguration ceremony, Health Minister Alex Katakwe emphasized that the project reflects the government's commitment to strengthening the health sector through investment in modern infrastructure capable of meeting citizens' needs.

He explained that the hospital will provide advanced services that reduce the need for patients to travel long distances within the country or go abroad for treatment, which will contribute to easing the financial and psychological burdens on patients and their families.

 National strategy to expand medical services

The minister pointed out that the project comes within a broader strategy to distribute specialized healthcare services across different regions, ensuring fairness in access to high-quality medical services for all citizens.

For his part, Rodney Sicumba, the Minister of Tourism, explained that the new hospital has important economic dimensions, as it is expected to contribute to transforming the city of Livingstone into a regional center for medical tourism.

He added that the project could attract patients from neighboring countries such as Zimbabwe and Botswana, as well as provide job opportunities for local communities during the construction and operation phases.

For her part, Eunice Nawa described the project as a “symbol of hope” for many families affected by cancer, stressing that it will contribute to improving access to health care, especially in the southern and western provinces of the country.

A step to strengthen the health system in Zambia

The establishment of the Livingstone Cancer Hospital represents a new step in the Zambian government's efforts to improve public health outcomes and build a more efficient and sustainable health system, capable of meeting growing health challenges.
