Egyptian-Sudanese consultations to strengthen the political process and end the Sudanese crisis

Cairo condemns the attack on Khartoum airport and affirms its support for the unity of Sudan.

Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad, held a telephone call with Mohi El-Din Salem, Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, on Tuesday, May 5, to discuss developments in the situation in brotherly Sudan, the efforts being made to stop the escalation and restore security and stability, as well as the course of regional and international moves aimed at supporting Sudan and its national institutions.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Minister Abdel-Aati condemned in the strongest terms the targeting of Khartoum International Airport during the call, stressing that it represents a flagrant violation of the rules of international law and international humanitarian law, and emphasizing Egypt’s complete rejection of any targeting of civilian facilities and infrastructure, or any practices that would deepen the Sudanese crisis and prolong the suffering of the brotherly Sudanese people.

The Foreign Minister stressed Egypt’s firm position in support of Sudan’s security, stability, territorial integrity and the integrity of its national institutions, stressing the importance of stopping all forms of escalation, prioritizing the Sudanese national interest and engaging seriously in a Sudanese-owned process that leads to a comprehensive political settlement that preserves Sudan’s sovereignty and meets the aspirations of its people for security, stability and development.

The spokesman added that Minister Abdel-Aty affirmed Egypt’s continued efforts and contacts with various regional and international parties, most notably the United States and the Quartet, to support de-escalation, alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Sudanese people, and support efforts aimed at restoring stability in brotherly Sudan.

For his part, the Sudanese Foreign Minister expressed his country’s appreciation for Egypt’s supportive stance towards Sudan, and Egypt’s continued support for its security, stability and territorial integrity, praising the efforts made by Egypt at the regional and international levels to support the path of de-escalation and ending the crisis, and stressing Sudan’s keenness to continue consultation and coordination with Egypt regarding various related developments.
