Samia Suluhu Hassan is one of the most prominent political leaders in the African continent in recent years, after she made history as the first woman to assume the presidency of Tanzania, in a move that constituted an important transformation in the country’s political landscape.
Samia Hassan was born on January 27, 1960 in the Zanzibar archipelago. She began her career in government and administration before turning to political life.
She held a number of executive and legislative positions, including membership in parliament and the Ministry of State for Federal Affairs, which gave her extensive experience in managing political and developmental files.
Tanzanian president who bet on openness and economic reform
In 2015, she was chosen as vice president to the late President John Magufuli, becoming the first woman to hold that position in the country's history. Following Magufuli's death in March 2021, she was sworn in as President of Tanzania in accordance with the constitution, assuming leadership of the nation during a critical period marked by economic, health, and political challenges.
Since coming to power, Samia Hassan has adopted a more open approach both domestically and internationally, working to improve relations with international partners and global financial institutions, encouraging foreign investment, and seeking to promote economic growth and attract capital to the infrastructure, energy, and tourism sectors.

Domestically, the Tanzanian president focused on strengthening political and media freedoms compared to the previous period, and launched initiatives to support the participation of women and youth in public life, along with her efforts to improve basic services in the areas of education, health and rural development.
It also played a prominent role in enhancing Tanzania’s regional standing, through its active participation in African and international summits, and its support for economic integration efforts within East African blocs.
Observers believe that Samia Hassan's experience represents a model of political leadership that has successfully combined stability and reform at a time when the continent's nations face increasing challenges related to development, security, and global economic changes. As her term continues, attention remains focused on her ability to implement further reforms and solidify Tanzania's position as one of Africa's emerging economies.
