Temporary suspension of the electronic travel authorization between Mali and Morocco
A remarkable administrative step

In a notable administrative move, the governments of Morocco and Mali announced the temporary suspension of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system for Malian citizens wishing to enter Morocco, due to technical problems that require technical updates to the digital system.
The decision, revealed during a joint press conference, comes as part of administrative coordination between the two countries aimed at simplifying travel procedures and ensuring the efficiency of the electronic system before its reactivation.
Official announcement from the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
The announcement was made by Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, who explained that the suspension would not be immediate, but would take effect within a period of two to three weeks, which is the estimated timeframe for addressing the technical malfunctions in the system.
Diop stressed that this measure is temporary and aims to improve the traveler experience and ensure the reliability of the electronic service when it is resumed.

What does the decision mean for financial travelers?
During the transition period, the current travel rules will remain unchanged and Malian citizens will be allowed to use alternative procedures to enter Morocco, such as:
-Apply for a visa through the Moroccan embassy
-Following the standard consular procedures in place
-Relying on standard entry mechanisms known before the implementation of the eTA system
The two governments are expected to issue a statement later to specify the exact date for suspending the system, along with detailed guidance for travelers.
Possible diplomatic motives behind the decision
Observers believe that this administrative step may also have diplomatic dimensions, especially since it came on the same day that Mali announced the withdrawal of its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and its support for Morocco’s position regarding its sovereignty over Western Sahara.
This timing drew attention to the fact that the decision was not only a technical matter, but may also reflect an advanced level of political and diplomatic coordination between the two countries.
System expected to return after update
The electronic travel permit system is expected to be reactivated after the completion of technical updates, which will ensure greater smoothness in travel between the two countries and enhance consular and administrative cooperation in the near future.
