The Security Council extends sanctions on armed groups in Central Africa for another year.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution extending sanctions against armed groups, individuals and entities that threaten security and stability in the Central African Republic for an additional year, in a move aimed at supporting the government’s efforts to address security challenges and strengthen the peace process.

The decision comes amid continued tension in some areas, where armed groups remain active outside state control, posing a challenge to efforts to restore security and impose the rule of law across the entire territory.

Continued restrictions on armed groups

The decision includes maintaining measures related to the arms embargo on armed groups, along with freezing financial assets and imposing travel bans on individuals and entities listed on the sanctions list.

These measures aim to limit the ability of armed groups to obtain funding and weapons, and to curtail their activities that threaten the security of civilians and hinder stabilization and development efforts.

Supporting the government and the peace process

The Security Council stressed the importance of continuing to support the government of the Central African Republic in implementing security sector reform programs and strengthening state institutions, noting that achieving lasting peace requires continued cooperation between the government and international partners.

He also stressed the need to continue implementing peace agreements, supporting national reconciliation efforts, and strengthening the role of state institutions in extending security and improving services provided to citizens.

Security challenges still exist

Despite the improvement witnessed in some areas during the past period, the country still faces major challenges, including the continued activity of armed groups in a number of regions, and the spread of arms smuggling across borders, which hinders efforts to achieve full stability.

Observers believe that the continuation of sanctions represents a means of putting pressure on armed groups to reduce their activities, while giving the government a greater opportunity to complete its security and development plans.

The resolution affirms the continued commitment of the international community to support the Central African Republic in addressing security challenges, through enhanced cooperation with the United Nations and regional partners, thereby contributing to the protection of civilians and supporting development efforts.
