Egypt's ambassador to Ethiopia meets with the UN Secretary-General: Epidemics and debt top the agenda.

Ambassador Dr. Obaida Al-Dandrawi, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Ethiopia and its Permanent Representative to Ethiopia, met with African Union The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Claver Gatete, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

During the meeting held on June 29, in the presence of the Second Secretary of the Egyptian Mission, Mohamed El-Soghayar, aspects of cooperation between the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and Egypt were discussed on a number of topics, including the issue of debt, especially in light of Egypt’s prominent role in dealing with the debt crisis.

Discussions on the epidemic situation in the African continent

The meeting also addressed the most important areas of the committee’s work with the Egyptian side, as well as Egypt’s role in transferring its expertise to a number of African countries within the framework of the committee.

Views were also exchanged on the most important continental issues, especially the Committee’s current efforts to raise the level of preparedness of African countries in dealing with the spread of diseases and epidemics, particularly through the Committee’s support for sustainable health financing in African countries.

Cairo supports Bujumbura in its bid to succeed as president of the African Union.

In a separate context, Ambassador Dr. Obaida El-Dandrawi, representative of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the African Union, met with Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe, Ambassador of the Republic of Burundi to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and his country’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, and Chairman of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, within the framework of ongoing consultations on issues included on the agenda of joint African action.

The meeting addressed a number of priority topics of interest to the member states of the African Union during the current stage, in addition to discussing the files on the agenda of the Burundian presidency of the African Union, and ways to advance integration and cooperation efforts between African countries in a way that serves the interests of the continent and its people.

During the meeting, Ambassador Dr. Obaida Al-Dandrawi affirmed the Arab Republic of Egypt’s full support for the Republic of Burundi during its presidency of the African Union, stressing Cairo’s keenness to cooperate and coordinate with Bujumbura in order to make this presidency a success and achieve the desired goals, in a way that contributes to strengthening joint African action and consolidating the principles of solidarity and cooperation among member states.

The Egyptian ambassador pointed to the importance of continuing efforts to address the common challenges facing the African continent, and to work on implementing development, stability and security priorities, in line with the aspirations of the African peoples and the goals of the African Union's development agenda.

For his part, Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s continued support for the African Union and for the various initiatives aimed at strengthening continental action, stressing the importance of continued coordination and consultation among member states to ensure tangible results during the Burundian presidency.
