Egypt and Africa: Medical aid diplomacy in the face of epidemics

Cairo is taking action in Africa: Egyptian medical aid arrives in Congo to combat Ebola.

The Arab Republic of Egypt sent a shipment of medical aid weighing 2.5 tons to the Democratic Republic of Congo, as part of its support for efforts to combat the spread of the virus. Ebola Which poses a regional and continental health threat, according to what Congolese authorities announced on Thursday.

 

The shipment arrived at N'Guili International Airport in the capital Kinshasa, where it was received in the presence of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Humanitarian Action and National Solidarity, Sylvain Yoma Ramazani, along with a representative of the Egyptian Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

 

Egyptian medical aid to Congo to combat Ebola

 

The aid includes medicines and medical supplies intended to support health response teams in combating the epidemic, which is currently spreading in several areas in the east of the country. The Congolese official praised the Egyptian support, describing Egypt as a sister nation, and emphasizing that this assistance came at a crucial time to support efforts to combat the epidemic.

According to health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Ebola virus has spread to 13 health zones spread across three eastern provinces: Ituri, which is the main epicenter of the epidemic, as well as North Kivu and South Kivu.

 

Upon receiving the shipment, it was officially transferred to the Ebola Response Coordination Office, where the relevant authorities at the Ministry of Public Health took over the technical supervision of it, in preparation for conducting the usual tests and procedures for medical aid before distributing it to the affected areas.

 

The Egyptian ambassador to Kinshasa, Hisham Abdel Salam Al-Maqoud, had announced a few days earlier the provision of this aid during a working meeting he had with the Congolese Minister of State, Eve Bazaiba Masoudi, the Director of the Office of the Minister of Public Health, and the Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

According to the latest figures released by the Congolese Ministry of Health as of May 26, there were 121 laboratory-confirmed cases of Ebola, including 17 deaths, in addition to 1,077 suspected cases, including 238 deaths. Authorities also indicated that more than 2,200 people were under medical observation, with cases reported in 11 health zones, and 133 people isolated in specialized health centers for treatment and monitoring.
