The video game industry creates wealth

Morocco's Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Ben Said, said on Wednesday that the video game industry is emerging as a driver for wealth creation and job opportunities.

In his speech during the opening of the third edition of the Morocco Games Exhibition, Ben Said stressed that the development of the gaming ecosystem depends primarily on human skills, highlighting the pivotal role played by banks and telecommunications companies in particular in developing the industry.

He also pointed out that the discussion surrounding the industry is no longer limited to video games, but now revolves around “the practical application of gameplay methods,” indicating that sectors such as security, the environment, and healthcare are now interested in the solutions that active startups in this field can offer, while providing tangible alternatives for young people through job creation.

He pointed out that Morocco aims to achieve a share of 1% of the global turnover of the video game industry, which is estimated at about $300 billion, by relying on its business incubators, adding that the ministry is committed to providing the necessary mechanisms to achieve this goal.

The opening ceremony featured the honoring of 12 Moroccan talents whose successful careers with leading global gaming companies were highlighted, in addition to the screening of a corporate film showcasing the promising potential of gaming in Morocco.

On Tuesday, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan presided over the opening ceremony of the third edition of MGE 2026, a major event for enthusiastic young people, professionals and stakeholders in the gaming industry, which was held from May 20 to 24 under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

The Moroccan Games Exhibition is being held in Rabat, and this third edition supports the city’s selection as the World Book Capital by UNESCO for 2026, in line with the royal vision to make the City of Lights a cultural capital.

The minister's remarks come at a time when Morocco continues its massive investments in culture, creative industries and digital transformation as part of its long-term economic vision, and the electronic games sector is increasingly seen as a promising sector within the broader creative economy.

With the continued rise in global demand for video games and interactive entertainment, Moroccan authorities see this as a strategic opportunity to build a competitive industry capable of generating sustainable revenues and exportable intellectual property.
