In a first of its kind in the Republic South SudanThe Minister of Information, Communications, Information Technology and Post, Ateny Wek Ateny, met at a ceremony held to honor a select group of distinguished media professionals in the country.

The organizers explained that the awards were not given based on competitive criteria, but rather in recognition of contributions and services provided in the media sector.

The ceremony was attended by ministers and diplomats, along with journalists, editors and broadcasters.
During his speech, the minister praised the journalists for their tireless efforts and urged them to cooperate and participate effectively in the country’s decision-making process ahead of the upcoming elections in December.

He emphasized that the media is a powerful communication tool, and that its optimal use benefits society by providing reliable information. He also encouraged all media representatives to cover events responsibly and to contact his office with any inquiries.
He announced that this ceremony will be held annually to honor one of the most prominent and distinguished media figures.
The Malawian government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting journalists and promoting press freedom in the country.
This came as part of the celebration of World Press Freedom Day 2026, and the Media Awards ceremony organized by MISA Malawi, which was held at the Sunbird Livingstonia Hotel in the Salema area on Sunday.
During his speech at the event, Malawi’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadrick Namalumba, said that the decision of the President of the Republic, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, to assign him to attend the event reflects the great importance that the current government attaches to the media sector and its role in society.
Namalumba explained that the President’s initiative is clear evidence of his government’s commitment to supporting the media and working collaboratively with it, noting that the executive branch views the media as a key partner in the national development process.
