Democratic Republic of Congo: 20 killed in new massacre linked to extremist groups
A new massacre targeting civilians in the Ituri region

Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has witnessed a new wave of violence, after simultaneous attacks attributed to elements of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people in Ituri province, in an escalation that reflects the continuing security challenges facing the country despite ongoing military operations against armed groups.
Local sources reported that the gunmen attacked several villages during the night, targeting civilians with firearms and bladed weapons, before fleeing to the forested areas, leaving behind dead and wounded and a state of panic among the residents.
Allied Democratic Forces under suspicion
Local officials have pointed the finger at the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which operates in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as being responsible for the recent attacks, noting that the group has intensified its operations in recent months, taking advantage of the rugged geography of the region and the difficulty of pursuing its members.
The group is considered one of the most dangerous armed organizations in the east of the country, as the authorities accuse it of carrying out repeated attacks against civilians and security forces. ISIS has claimed responsibility on previous occasions for some of the operations carried out by the group, despite the ongoing controversy regarding the nature of the relationship between the two sides.
Military operations continue despite the challenges
The Congolese armed forces, with support from the Ugandan army, continue to carry out joint military operations to pursue armed groups in the eastern regions, but recent attacks have shown the militants' continued ability to carry out hit-and-run attacks against remote villages.
Observers believe that the vastness of the forests, the weakness of the infrastructure, the difficulty of accessing some areas, along with the continued displacement of the population, are all factors that complicate the efforts of the security forces to eliminate armed groups once and for all.
A humanitarian crisis is worsening in the east of the country.
These attacks come at a time when the eastern provinces are suffering from complex humanitarian conditions, as a result of the continuation of armed conflicts and the high number of displaced people, as well as health challenges related to the outbreak of diseases, which increases the pressure on local communities.
Humanitarian organizations confirmed that the repeated attacks are forcing more families to flee their areas and hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid to the affected villages, amid demands for greater protection for civilians and enhanced humanitarian response.
Calls to strengthen security and protect civilians
Local officials have called on the Congolese government and its regional partners to intensify security operations and strengthen the military presence in threatened areas to prevent a recurrence of attacks and restore stability in the east of the country.
Analysts emphasize that ending the cycle of violence requires a comprehensive strategy that is not limited to military solutions, but also includes improving economic and social conditions and strengthening state institutions in conflict-affected areas, thereby limiting the ability of armed groups to continue their activities and ensuring the protection of civilians from repeated attacks.
