More than 1.3 million displaced people return to their homes in Burkina Faso

The Ministry of Family and Solidarity in Burkina Faso announced significant progress in the return of internally displaced persons, with more than 1.31 million citizens returning to their areas of origin as of June 30, 2026, an indicator reflecting a gradual improvement in Security situation Humanity after years of displacement.

More than 1.31 million people have returned

The interim report on the implementation of the Ministry’s 2026 goals showed that the number of returnees rose to more than 1.310 million people who returned to 1034 areas, compared to about 1.160 million people who returned to 871 areas as of December 31, 2025, confirming the expansion of the return and the stabilization of conditions in an increasing number of areas.

In support of this approach, the Prime Minister directed the government to focus on rehabilitating housing in villages and areas to which residents have returned, instead of continuing to build new housing within displacement sites, with the aim of consolidating permanent return and promoting community stability.

The government is also working on implementing a range of initiatives to support the recovery phase, including strengthening the capabilities of the National Relief and Rehabilitation Council (CONASUR) by providing it with 66 new trucks, in addition to launching the national campaign «DƐMƐ SIRA», launching its digital platform, as well as starting the pilot phase of the mobile social service to expand the scope of services provided to citizens.

Providing stable and dignified living conditions for returning families

The Minister of Family and Solidarity affirmed that these measures reflect a new governmental approach based on moving from the emergency humanitarian response phase to the recovery and resilience-building phase, which enhances self-reliance within local communities.

The minister stressed the government’s commitment to continue working with various partners to ensure stable and dignified living conditions for returning families, and to support efforts to restore stability and development in areas where residents have returned.

In another context, the government approved Burkina Faso An amendment to the 2026 general budget law stipulates raising total spending to $7.32 billion, in a move that reflects the authorities’ efforts to provide additional resources to confront economic and security pressures and to finance priority projects during the current year.

The decision came during a cabinet meeting, which approved the draft supplementary budget law, in preparation for referring it to the legislative authority to complete the approval procedures, allowing for the updating of fiscal policy in line with the developments witnessed by the national economy since the adoption of the original budget.
