At a time when global production companies are racing to find new markets and different stories, attention is turning to the West. AfricaFollowing the announcement by British actor and producer of Sierra Leonean origin, Idris Elba, of a new production partnership aimed at transforming the region into a global hub for action film production, in a move that could represent a turning point in the future of African cinema.
Idris Elba is betting on West Africa... Will the continent become a global hub for action film production?
The partnership includes Idris Elba’s 22Summers, Nile Media Entertainment Group led by Nigerian producer Musa Babatup, and Action Xtreme, an action film company. The partners intend to produce a series of commercial films inspired by the stories, cultures, and talents coming from West Africa.
From film production to a complete industry
The project is not limited to producing new cinematic works, but aims to create a sustainable production system that supports the growth of the film industry in the continent, through investment in discovering local talents, training directors, writers and technicians, and providing mentoring and qualification programs, in order to ensure the building of a production base capable of competing globally.
The organizers of the initiative emphasize that the goal goes beyond producing commercially successful films, to creating a professional production environment that gives African filmmakers the opportunity to present their work to international markets without abandoning their cultural identity.
Why did Idris Elba choose action movies?
The partners believe that action films are among the most capable cinematic genres to achieve global reach, because they rely on visual and kinetic elements that transcend language barriers, while at the same time allowing for the presentation of local culture and African identity within stories capable of reaching a wide audience.
They also believe that West Africa has all the necessary ingredients for the success of this type of production, whether in terms of natural locations, artistic talents, or stories that have not yet been adequately exploited.
Production roadmap extending to 2027
The first film of the project is scheduled to be announced soon, and will be released during the last quarter of 2026, while the second film will be released in the first quarter of 2027.
Idris Elba and Jenna Carter will serve as executive producers, and Elba will also direct one of the project's films himself. Chi Kyung Cheung will direct and produce the first film through Action Xtreme, while producer Musa Babatoub will oversee production through Nile Motion Pictures, and Nile Entertainment will handle distribution of the films within African markets.
What does the project mean for African cinema?
The project comes at a time when African cinema is witnessing increasing interest from global streaming platforms and major production companies, who have begun to view the continent as a promising market for original content.
Observers believe that the success of this partnership could open the door to new investments in the film sector, provide job opportunities for hundreds of actors, technicians and content creators, and may also contribute to transferring global expertise to the continent and enhancing the presence of African productions in international cinemas and platforms.
The project is not just a collaboration between three production companies, but reflects a vision aimed at moving West Africa from the stage of exporting talent to the stage of exporting an integrated film industry, capable of competing in global markets, and presenting its own narrative to the world through films that carry the African identity with international production standards.
