Hundreds arrested in Kenya during commemoration of Generation Z protests

The Kenyan capital, Nairobi, witnessed a widespread security deployment and arrests of hundreds of people during events commemorating the second anniversary of the “Generation Z” protests that erupted in 2024, which at the time turned into one of the largest waves of protest the country has witnessed in recent years.

Authorities closed a number of main roads leading to the capital's center and the parliament area, while police forces were deployed in vital areas in anticipation of violence or unrest.

Protesters demand justice

Hundreds of citizens, families of victims, and activists took to the streets to demand justice for the dead and injured who fell during the 2024 protests, which erupted in protest against economic policies and tax increases.

The participants carried flowers and banners, demanding that those responsible for the violence that accompanied the protests be held accountable, and that compensation allocated to the victims' families be paid quickly.

Some areas also witnessed memorial marches to commemorate those killed during the clashes that took place two years ago.

Hundreds arrested during protests

Kenyan authorities announced the arrest of more than 350 people during the protests, stressing that the security measures were aimed at maintaining public order and preventing acts of sabotage and violence.

Police used tear gas to disperse some gatherings, while officials indicated that the arrests targeted people suspected of involvement in riots or violating security instructions.

In contrast, human rights organizations and civil activists criticized the arrests, considering them a restriction on the right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression.

The 2024 protests are still casting a shadow

The 2024 protests erupted over a draft financial law that included tax increases, which sparked widespread public anger, before the demonstrations escalated into clashes with security forces.

Those events witnessed protesters storming the vicinity of Parliament and dozens of deaths and injuries, which prompted the government at the time to back down on some controversial economic measures.

The families of the victims and civil society organizations continue to demand thorough investigations and accountability for those responsible for the violations that occurred during those events.

Fears of renewed tensions

The recent protests have raised concerns about a return of political and social tensions in Kenya, especially given the ongoing discussions about the economic situation and the rising cost of living.

The government called for maintaining security and stability and respecting the law, while activists demanded the need to open a national dialogue to address the economic and political issues that drove young people to take to the streets.

Observers believe that the second anniversary of the “Generation Z” protests reflects the continued demands for justice, accountability, and economic reforms, issues that remain strongly present in the Kenyan landscape.
