Ghanaian player Dominic Frimpong, winger for Berekum Chelsea, was killed in an armed robbery on his team's bus.
The incident occurred as the team was returning from a local league match against Smartix yesterday.
The gunmen ambushed the bus on the Guasso-Bibiani road as it was returning home after the Samartex Samriboi confrontation in the south of the country.
Attack by a group of thieves
The club said: On our way back to Berekum from Samriboi, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent us from passing.

He added: "Masked men carrying rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and coaching staff fled into the nearby bushes to take cover from the gunfire.".
The Ghana Football Association stated that Frimpong (20 years old) died in the accident.

He explained: The Ghana Football Association received with great shock and deep sadness the tragic news of the death of Dominic Frimpong, player of Berekum Chelsea.

He said: “This incident is not only a great loss for Berekum Chelsea, but for Ghanaian football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent and his dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of the Ghanaian league.”.
He stressed that he would strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling to participate in local competitions.
