The scene began to repeat itself, as one of the grandmothers was inside her hut, which quickly filled with water, while “Dinin” and her children were trapped amidst the floods in the informal settlements of Immagwalini and Mandela in Worcester, Western Cape Province.

Residents of the Immagwalini shantytown in South Africa reported that they were forced to flee in haste to save their lives after water rose to chest level, leaving their belongings behind amid torrential floods that swept through the area suddenly.

Residents spoke of terrifying moments they experienced while trying to survive in the dark, at a time when the informal settlements of Immagwalini and Mandela were among the areas most affected by the storm that hit the city.
Reports indicated that one of the survivors, named “Dinin”, had a harrowing experience that brought back memories of previous floods in the Eastern Cape, which resulted in the death of more than 100 people, as she was forced to flee again with her children through the raging waters for fear of drowning.

Local residents said that a neighboring farmer opened one of the dams during bad weather, causing large amounts of water to flow towards residential areas, flooding homes and displacing families.

These events coincided with warnings of extremely dangerous weather in the Western Cape province, where Worcester has been placed in an area affected by a high-level weather classification since Sunday.
The tragedy has turned into a renewed shock for the residents, who still live under the shadow of fear of a repeat of the disasters, amid calls for the need to strengthen protection and early warning measures to prevent a recurrence of such devastating floods.
