Minister revealed Interior In Kenya, Kipchumba Murkumin reported that more than 13 people suspected of involvement in the attack on Senator Godfrey Osotzei have fled the country following the attack on April 8, 2026, in the city of KisumuWhich sparked widespread political and security controversy within the country.

The minister explained during a session before the security committee in the Kenyan parliament on April 21, 2026, that the Criminal Investigation Department had circulated photos of the suspects, which prompted some of them to surrender themselves, while others managed to escape across the border.

He added that the authorities have begun international pursuit operations in coordination with neighboring countries to track down the fugitives and bring them to justice.

Holding all those involved accountable

Murkumin stressed that the government will not tolerate this issue, noting that security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police and the Criminal Investigation Department, are directly following up on the investigations.

He stressed that all those involved would be arrested wherever they are found and brought to trial, describing the incident as a serious attack on the country's political life.

Details of the attack on Senator Osotzei

The incident dates back to an attack on Senator Godfrey Osotzei, representative of Vihega County, while he was in a cafe in Kisumu City, where he was attacked by a group of young men disguised as his supporters.

CCTV footage showed him being beaten and dragged, resulting in serious injuries that required him to be transferred to the capital, Nairobi, for treatment at a specialized hospital.

The incident sparked widespread political reactions within Kenya, with figures from various political factions condemning it and considering it a threat to political stability.

In contrast, the opposition accused government officials of involvement in the attack, accusations which the government categorically denied, asserting that the ongoing investigations would reveal the whole truth without exception.

Arrest of suspects 

Following the incident, the Criminal Investigation Department announced the arrest of three suspects in Kisumu County, while authorities continue to pursue the remaining individuals involved both inside and outside the country, while strengthening security measures and regional coordination to track down fugitives.

This development comes amid growing concerns about the use of informal groups in political conflicts within Kenya, raising increasing anxiety about political stability and the safety of public figures, and posing additional challenges to the government's efforts to strengthen security, the rule of law, and combat political violence.
