The announcement was made by the court's president, Kosi Dorothy Sousa, who explained that the electoral process did not witness any irregularities that would warrant cancellation.

Anticipated inauguration

The court confirmed that Wadani will officially take office on May 24, succeeding outgoing President Patrice Talon, in a move that reflects the continuity of the political and economic approach followed by the government in recent years.

The election saw limited competition, with Paul Hunkby being the only opposition candidate, after the main “Democrats” party was disqualified for failing to meet the candidacy requirements.

Honkbee conceded defeat early, after receiving less than 6% of the votes, at a time when observers considered the election result to be almost a foregone conclusion.

Economic performance supports Wadani's rise

Wadani has a distinguished economic record, having led reforms during his decade as finance minister that helped reduce the fiscal deficit to about 3% of GDP, while also supporting economic growth, expanding infrastructure projects and boosting the tourism sector.

Despite this performance, the president-elect faces significant challenges, most notably the widening wealth gap within the country, in addition to the deteriorating security situation in the northern regions as a result of attacks attributed to armed groups, which puts pressure on the new government to achieve a balance between economic and security stability.

The election of Wadani marks the beginning of a new phase in Benin, with expectations of continued economic reforms, along with the need to address social and security issues to ensure the country's stability and promote a path toward sustainable development.

Who is Romuald Wadani?

Romuald Wadani (born June 20, 1976) is a Beninese politician and the elected President of the Republic of Benin. He has served as Minister of Economy and Finance of Benin since April 2016.

Before entering politics, Wadani worked at the consulting firm Deloitte for 17 years. He was first appointed Minister of Economy and Finance on April 7, 2016 in Talon's first government, and was then reappointed in 2021 as Prime Minister.
