This operation comes in the wake of widespread attacks in Mali in recent days, targeting military and strategic sites in Bamako and Kati, resulting in deaths and injuries, and raising the level of alert within security and military institutions.

The city of Kati is of particular importance, as it contains key military sites and is one of the most prominent centers of military deployment near the capital, which makes any attack on it have significant security and political dimensions.

Ongoing challenges in confronting armed groups

Mali has faced complex security challenges for years as a result of the activity of armed groups and extremist organizations, especially in the central, northern and some western regions, where these groups exploit the vast geographical areas and weak infrastructure to move around and carry out sporadic attacks.

The Malian armed forces’ current strategy relies on expanding the scope of proactive operations, strengthening reconnaissance capabilities, and carrying out focused strikes against the positions and movements of armed groups, with the aim of preventing them from regrouping or expanding towards major cities.
