The repercussions of war... UN: 70 million Sudanese live below the poverty line

They live in abject poverty on less than two dollars a day

The Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Sudan, Luca Renda, announced that poverty rates in Sudan have more than doubled since the outbreak of war three years ago, with 701,000 people now living below the poverty line.

“Looking at the situation before the war, we find that poverty rates have actually doubled,” Renda told AFP. “Before the war, about 381,000 people lived below the poverty line, but now we estimate that the figure has reached about 701,000.”.

He added that “one in four Sudanese lives in extreme poverty on less than two dollars a day.”.

The situation of Sudanese people has deteriorated due to the war.

The World Food Programme had described the situation in Sudan as the world’s largest humanitarian hunger crisis, noting that more than 19 million people out of a population of about 45 million are facing acute food insecurity, amid the ongoing conflict and its economic and humanitarian repercussions.

The United Nations returns to the capital, Khartoum

The program announced the reactivation of its country office in the Sudanese capital, after it had been operating in Port Sudan since the outbreak of the war, as a prelude to a broad return of the United Nations to the capital, Khartoum.

Documented reports reveal the significant damage caused by the Sudan war from mid-April 2023 until now to the Sudanese economy, with international reports indicating that the size of the economy has shrunk by more than 42% compared to pre-war levels.

The economic collapse has had a direct impact on the lives of Sudanese citizens, creating the world’s worst displacement and food security crisis, with 601,000 Sudanese losing their sources of income entirely and significant damage to infrastructure.
