A comprehensive campaign to clean and beautify the capital, Djibouti, has been launched ahead of Independence Day.

On Saturday morning, June 20, 2026, the municipality of Djibouti City launched a large-scale cleaning and beautification campaign covering various neighborhoods of the capital, as part of preparations for the celebration of the forty-ninth anniversary of national independence, starting from Martyr Mahmoud Al-Harbi Square.
This initiative is part of the community mobilization efforts led by the local authorities with the aim of improving the urban landscape of the capital, providing a cleaner and more attractive environment befitting the national occasion, and reflecting a positive image of the city to citizens and visitors.
Djibouti Municipality launches cleaning and beautification campaign
The launch ceremony was attended by a number of officials, including the Mayor of Djibouti City, Mr. Said Daoud Mohamed Al-Mazjaji, the Governor of the city, Mr. Abdi Hassan, the First Deputy Mayor, Ms. Fatma Kamil, the Deputy Governor of the First District, as well as officials of the technical departments and representatives of a number of national institutions, including the Djibouti Roads Agency (ADR), the National Roads Office (OVD), and the National Water and Sanitation Office (ONEAD). .

The campaign also involved the defense and security forces, including the Djiboutian Armed Forces, the Coast Guard, the National Police, and the National Gendarmerie, along with a number of community associations and economic actors, as well as a crowd of citizens who engaged in this collective initiative.
The campaign is not limited to street cleaning, waste removal, and the rehabilitation of public spaces, but also aims to promote community awareness of the importance of civic behavior, environmental protection, and the preservation of public property as a shared responsibility between the state and society.
The mayor of Djibouti City, in a speech during the launch of the campaign, stressed that the cleanliness and beautification of the capital is a collective responsibility that requires the combined efforts of all components of society, emphasizing the importance of continuing these initiatives because of their direct impact on the quality of life and the urban appearance of the city.

The mayor called on citizens to continue their positive participation in such campaigns, saying: “As we approach our national holiday, every citizen is invited to contribute from their position to improving the framework of our daily lives, and to make our capital a symbol of national pride, unity, and the spirit of citizenship.” .
According to its organizers, this campaign reflects the local authorities' orientation towards strengthening community partnership in managing public affairs, by involving various actors in efforts to improve the urban environment.
The campaign is scheduled to continue in the coming days to include more neighborhoods in the capital, as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at making Djibouti City cleaner, more attractive and ready for the upcoming national celebrations.
