Relations between the United States and South Africa are experiencing escalating tensions, bringing back to the forefront political and diplomatic disputes that have accumulated since the presidency of Donald Trump. Pretoria refused to join Western sanctions against Russia and hosted joint military exercises with Russian and Chinese forces, angering the US administration and Congress.
Washington believes that South Africa, a member of the BRICS group, is seeking to promote a multipolar world order away from American hegemony, which the United States considers a threat to its traditional influence on the African continent.
The Gaza issue deepens the crisis
South Africa’s stance on the war in Gaza has deepened the rift with the United States, after Pretoria filed a lawsuit before the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of committing violations against Palestinians. The move received widespread support within Africa and the developing world, but it provoked the displeasure of Washington, Israel’s main supporter.
Observers believe that South Africa's moves reflect its desire to play a larger international role, based on its political history of opposing apartheid and defending liberation causes.
Power struggle within the African continent
Experts believe that the tension between Trump and South Africa goes beyond traditional political differences, reflecting a broader struggle for influence within Africa, in light of the growing Russian and Chinese roles on the continent.
While Washington seeks to maintain its strategic influence, Pretoria is trying to present itself as an independent African power capable of challenging Western policies and leading more liberal positions on the international stage.
