Fifty years after the founding of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the organization stands at a pivotal moment in its history, amid growing security challenges, political and social divisions, and an unfavorable international context.
In this context, the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomêne Faye, delivered a message that he described as a message of “truth and hope,” stressing that the time is no longer right to merely diagnose the situation, but rather requires taking practical measures.
Reforming ECOWAS to enable it to provide peace and security
The Senegalese president called for the renewal of ECOWAS so that it can provide peace, security and prosperity for the peoples of the region, especially the youth, in order to fulfill the aspirations sought by the founding fathers.
He stressed that the declaration of commitment to a charter for the future of regional integration should not remain merely a declaration of intent, but should be transformed into a practical commitment that imposes responsibilities on member states.
He stressed that Senegal, true to its history and its African unity approach, intends to be among the countries most committed to advancing this path and strengthening the future of regional integration in West Africa.
