The Nigerian army responded to Amnesty International by accusing it of involvement in the killing of 100 civilians following an air raid.

The army denied the report that it had targeted a market earlier this week, resulting in the reported number of deaths.

Amnesty International said in a statement that military aircraft bombed the market in Tomfa, Zamfara State, on Sunday.

Isa Sanusi, director of Amnesty International in Nigeria, told the Associated Press: “In just one village, 80 people were buried, and there is no evidence that any of those killed were bandits… They are all civilians. The majority of them are young girls and boys.”.

The Nigerian military confirmed it had launched an airstrike but said: “No verifiable evidence has been found of civilian casualties as reported by the media.”.

Army spokesman Major General Michael Onoga stressed that “civilians are not the target, and every effort is being made to avoid civilian casualties,” adding that military operations are continuing in the area.

Nigeria faces threats from multiple armed groups such as Boko Haram.
