In a decisive move to regulate unregulated mining activities, the Minerals Protection Police forces in Uganda Illegal gold mining operations in the village of Mabuka, in the Bukana sub-district, were targeted in a large-scale security campaign that resulted in the evacuation of more than 10,000 miners from the site.
Unprecedented influx of gold prospectors
The security operation came after a large influx of gold prospectors into the area in a short period of time, following news of promising quantities of the precious metal, which led to what local residents described as a ”gold rush”.
This sudden influx caused the site to become crowded with thousands of people coming from different regions in search of quick profit opportunities.
Growing environmental and security concerns
Ugandan authorities explained that the activities that were being carried out at the site were outside the legal framework and without obtaining the required licenses, which raised increasing concerns about potential environmental damage and risks to the safety of workers.
The relevant authorities confirmed that random digging operations and the use of equipment in an unregulated manner may lead to landslides and serious accidents, in addition to their negative impact on natural resources and the local environment.
Enhancing security deployment
As part of its efforts to prevent the resumption of illegal activities, Ugandan police have deployed additional forces to the area to secure the site and ensure that illegal miners do not return.
The relevant authorities have also begun implementing strict monitoring procedures and continuous follow-up of the area to detect any new attempts to practice illegal mining.
The police stressed that maintaining public order and protecting natural resources are a top priority, noting that the state will not tolerate any activities that may threaten the safety of citizens or harm the environment.
A call to abide by the laws
The authorities called on citizens and those wishing to work in the mining sector to comply with the legal procedures regulating this activity, and to obtain the necessary official licenses before starting any exploration or extraction of minerals.
The government stressed that it will continue to take strict measures against violators, as part of its efforts to regulate the mining sector and ensure the exploitation of mineral resources in a legal, safe and sustainable manner, in order to achieve a balance between economic development and the protection of the environment and local communities.
