In a move reflecting a growing trend towards digital transformation in traffic management, Burkina Faso is preparing to implement a new electronic monitoring system based on smart cameras to automatically detect traffic violations, starting from August 1, 2026.

The system aims to reduce dangerous behaviors on the roads by monitoring violations and immediately notifying offenders via text messages, while also allowing for the electronic payment of fines, as part of a government plan to enhance traffic safety and raise the level of compliance with laws.

Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sanna, announced the official launch of the electronic traffic violation system, stressing that the new system aims to monitor four main types of traffic violations: failure to comply with traffic signals, failure to wear a seat belt, use of a mobile phone while driving, and exceeding the speed limit.
The minister explained that, starting from the start of the application, surveillance cameras will automatically monitor violations, and in the event that a vehicle is caught exceeding the legal speed limit, an automatic and immediate notification will be sent to the vehicle owner’s phone.
He added that the text message will include all the details of the violation, along with a direct link that allows the fine to be paid electronically via the official FasoArzêka platform.
The Minister of Security confirmed that drivers have a one-month grace period from the date of recording the violation to pay the fine, noting that after the end of this grace period, the violating vehicles will be systematically impounded during traffic campaigns or when conducting the mandatory periodic technical inspection.
He pointed out that delays in paying fines may result in additional fines, in addition to the possibility of imposing penalties that include performing community service.
Mohammedou Sana stressed that the implementation of the automated traffic system is not only for punishment, but also represents a preventive tool to promote traffic discipline and reduce irresponsible behaviors that cause accidents and affect families on a daily basis.
In closing, the Minister of Security called on all citizens to exercise civic responsibility and cooperate with the authorities, stressing his confidence that everyone will contribute to making the roads safer in Burkina Faso.
