Badr Abdel-Aty heads to Uganda to participate in the AUSSOM summit

Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister Foreign Ministry The Ministry of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs traveled on Thursday to the Ugandan capital, Kampala, to participate in the second extraordinary summit of troop-contributing countries to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The Foreign Minister is scheduled to deliver Egypt’s speech during the summit sessions, during which he will review Cairo’s position supporting efforts to achieve security and stability in Somalia, and to strengthen the role of the African Union Mission in supporting Somali state institutions.

On the sidelines of the summit, Abdel-Aati will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with a number of senior participating officials to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, exchange views on regional developments, and discuss a number of issues of common interest.

Egypt’s participation in the summit comes within the framework of its continued support for African efforts aimed at strengthening security and stability in the Horn of Africa region, and contributing to supporting Somali state institutions, thereby consolidating security and peace in the region.

In this context, Ugandan President Yoweri received MuseveniToday, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met at the Presidential Palace in Entebbe, as part of ongoing regional consultations on strengthening security and stability in Somalia.

The visit comes after the conclusion of the meeting held by the defense ministers of the countries contributing troops to the African Union Mission to Support Stabilization in Somalia (AUSSOM), where the ministers approved the technical report prepared by the army chiefs of the countries participating in the mission.

Participation of diplomats, military and security leaders

The three-day meetings saw the participation of diplomats, military and security leaders from Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya and Somalia, the host country, to discuss ways to enhance security coordination and support stabilization efforts.

The technical report, which has been finalized by the military leaders, is set to form the basis of the ministerial deliberations before being submitted to the heads of state participating in the extraordinary summit scheduled for Friday, to discuss the next steps for supporting the African Union mission and strengthening security in Somalia.
