African Freestyle Skiing Championships in Cairo

Kenyan skier Kevin Kyari won the gold medal at the African Freestyle Skiing Championships in Cairo, continuing his rapid rise on the continental stage after his previous medal win in Benin, where he represented Kenya alone in a competition that included 11 countries.

This victory comes amid growing interest in his sporting career and the financial challenges he faces in professional skiing, as his previous international participations were partly supported through private sponsorship and personal fundraising, despite his continued success in achieving outstanding results for Kenya.

In another context, Kenyan President William Ruto honored Kenyan runner Sebastian Sowe after he became the first person to finish an official marathon in under two hours.

Sawy clocked a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds in the London Marathon, one of the toughest hurdles in athletics, last Sunday, breaking the previous world record by more than a minute.

After the plane carrying the runner was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute upon landing at Nairobi International Airport last Wednesday, the Kenyan president received the runner, Sawi, at the presidential palace and awarded him a reward of eight million Kenyan shillings ($62,064).

“She not only broke a record, but expanded the horizons of human potential,” Ruto said at a ceremony attended by government and sports officials.

The Kenyan president added: “I have achieved what many thought was difficult to achieve. I have made the impossible possible, and in doing so, I have inspired the nation and the world.”.
