Uganda officially declares Ebola eradicated 42 days after the last recovery case
The outbreak ended after meeting international standards.

Uganda has officially declared the end of the Ebola outbreak, 42 days after the last patient recovered and was discharged from the treatment center without any new infections being recorded, which is the standard adopted by the World Health Organization to declare the end of any outbreak of the disease.
This announcement is a significant achievement for the Ugandan health sector, which managed to contain the virus in a short period and prevent its widespread transmission, despite concerns that accompanied the emergence of infections in light of the continued Ebola outbreak in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
A rapid health response limited the spread of the disease.
Since the first cases were recorded, health authorities have launched a comprehensive response plan that includes isolating infected people, tracking contacts, strengthening screening procedures in hospitals and border crossings, in addition to implementing awareness campaigns to raise awareness among citizens about methods of prevention and the importance of early reporting of any suspected symptoms.
The collaboration between the Ugandan Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, and international partners also contributed to providing technical and logistical support, which helped to contain the outbreak and prevent its spread within local communities.
Accumulated experience has strengthened Uganda's ability to cope.
Health experts believe that Uganda's success in controlling Ebola is due to the experience it gained from dealing with previous waves of the disease, which was reflected in the speed with which cases were detected and responded to.
The authorities relied on trained response teams and effective epidemiological surveillance systems, along with the implementation of strict contact tracing procedures, which helped break the chain of transmission and reach the stage of declaring the end of the outbreak.
Continued alert on the border
Despite the declared end of the outbreak, health authorities confirmed that they will continue to raise the level of preparedness, especially with the continued spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which shares a long border with Uganda that witnesses constant movement.
The relevant authorities will continue to monitor border crossings, conduct necessary examinations of travelers, and strengthen health monitoring systems to ensure swift action in dealing with any suspected case and to prevent the virus from returning again.
A positive message for East African countries
Uganda’s declaration that it is Ebola-free represents a successful model in managing health crises, and underscores the importance of rapid response and coordination between health institutions and international partners in reducing the spread of epidemics.
Health officials hope this success will contribute to strengthening regional cooperation in epidemiological surveillance and the exchange of expertise, thereby supporting the ability of East African countries to confront any future outbreaks of infectious diseases.
