Le m\u00e9morial du g\u00e9nocide de Nyamata, site inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, est l'un des sites comm\u00e9moratifs nationaux les plus importants du Rwanda, \u00e9rig\u00e9 autour d'une ancienne \u00e9glise catholique situ\u00e9e \u00e0 environ 30 kilom\u00e8tres au sud de la capitale, Kigali.<\/p>\n

Ce site comm\u00e9more l'un des g\u00e9nocides les plus sanglants de 1994, au cours duquel environ 50 000 personnes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9es dans la zone de l'\u00e9glise de Nyamata, dont environ 15 000 \u00e0 l'int\u00e9rieur m\u00eame de l'\u00e9glise entre le 16 et le 18 avril de cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0.<\/p>\n

Lors des vagues de violence, des milliers de Tutsis se r\u00e9fugi\u00e8rent dans des \u00e9glises, comme lors des incidents pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents, mais cette fois, ces \u00e9difices devinrent des lieux de massacre. Apr\u00e8s l'\u00e9chec initial des milices \u00e0 prendre d'assaut l'\u00e9glise, la garde pr\u00e9sidentielle fut appel\u00e9e en renfort et utilisa des grenades pour y p\u00e9n\u00e9trer avant d'achever les survivants \u00e0 la machette.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 l'int\u00e9rieur de l'\u00e9glise, les bancs con\u00e7us pour accueillir environ 600 fid\u00e8les t\u00e9moignent encore de l'ampleur de la trag\u00e9die, car ils sont recouverts des v\u00eatements des victimes qui se sont accumul\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re dense, dans une sc\u00e8ne qui refl\u00e8te l'ampleur \u00e9norme des pertes humaines.<\/p>\n

Dans les sous-sols de l'immeuble, des ossements et des cr\u00e2nes sont empil\u00e9s du sol au plafond sur des \u00e9tag\u00e8res d\u00e9di\u00e9es, portant encore les traces de violence laiss\u00e9es par les instruments du meurtre, fissures et trous.<\/p>\n

Les statistiques estiment que le g\u00e9nocide rwandais, qui a dur\u00e9 d'avril \u00e0 juillet 1994, a fait environ un million de morts en seulement cent jours. Le M\u00e9morial de Nyamata conserve intacts des objets originaux de cette p\u00e9riode, t\u00e9moins tangibles de l'un des crimes les plus horribles de l'histoire moderne, dans un effort constant pour comm\u00e9morer cette trag\u00e9die et emp\u00eacher qu'elle ne se reproduise.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
