Avec la nouvelle \u00e9pid\u00e9mie du virus Ebola<\/a> En R\u00e9publique d\u00e9mocratique du Congo et en Ouganda, depuis le printemps 2026, un constat s'impose : les femmes repr\u00e9sentent une proportion plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e de victimes, non pas pour des raisons biologiques, mais en raison de facteurs sociaux et culturels profond\u00e9ment enracin\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Lors de l'\u00e9pid\u00e9mie d'Ebola de 2018-2019 en R\u00e9publique d\u00e9mocratique du Congo, les femmes et les filles repr\u00e9sentaient pr\u00e8s des deux tiers des cas recens\u00e9s, selon ONU Femmes.<\/p>\n

En 2014, en Afrique de l'Ouest, ils repr\u00e9sentaient jusqu'aux trois quarts des d\u00e9c\u00e8s li\u00e9s \u00e0 Ebola dans certaines communaut\u00e9s du Lib\u00e9ria.<\/p>\n

\u00e9pid\u00e9mie d'Ebola<\/h4>\n

De m\u00eame, en Ouganda, au cours de la p\u00e9riode 2000-2001, le nombre de femmes infect\u00e9es a d\u00e9pass\u00e9 le nombre d'hommes tout au long de la p\u00e9riode \u00e9pid\u00e9mique, et au Soudan en 1979, le pourcentage de femmes infect\u00e9es a atteint 69%.<\/p>\n

Aujourd'hui, l'histoire menace de se r\u00e9p\u00e9ter.<\/p>\n

\u201c Nous verrons certainement le m\u00eame sch\u00e9ma se reproduire pendant cette pand\u00e9mie en R\u00e9publique d\u00e9mocratique du Congo et en Ouganda, qui survient \u00e0 un moment o\u00f9 la R\u00e9publique d\u00e9mocratique du Congo est d\u00e9j\u00e0 confront\u00e9e \u00e0 une grave crise humanitaire et \u00e0 une pression \u00e9norme sur les services de sant\u00e9 \u201c, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Sofia Kaltorp, chef des affaires humanitaires \u00e0 ONU Femmes, le 22 mai 2026 \u00e0 Gen\u00e8ve.<\/p>\n

Les r\u00f4les sociaux qui en r\u00e9v\u00e8lent davantage<\/h4>\n

Jack Kanko, \u00e9pid\u00e9miologiste \u00e0 l'\u00c9cole de sant\u00e9 publique de Kinshasa, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 \u00e0 TV5MONDE que le taux de mortalit\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9 chez les femmes d\u00fb \u00e0 Ebola \u201d n'est pas d\u00fb \u00e0 des facteurs biologiques, mais \u00e0 des facteurs sociaux et culturels \u201c.<\/p>\n

Il ajoute\u00a0: \u201c\u00a0Ce sont souvent les femmes qui soignent les patients, aident \u00e0 domicile, accompagnent les proches dans les \u00e9tablissements de sant\u00e9 et participent aux pr\u00e9paratifs des fun\u00e9railles. Cette proximit\u00e9 avec les patients peut accro\u00eetre leur risque d\u2019infection.\u00a0\u201d .<\/p>\n

Cette r\u00e9alit\u00e9 est constat\u00e9e dans toutes les zones touch\u00e9es. Les femmes constituent la majorit\u00e9 du personnel infirmier, des agents d'entretien hospitaliers et des sages-femmes traditionnelles. Ce sont \u00e9galement elles qui pr\u00e9parent et servent les repas aux patients, lavent leurs v\u00eatements et les soignent \u00e0 domicile. Lors du d\u00e9c\u00e8s d'un membre de la famille, c'est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement une femme (tante ou grand-m\u00e8re) qui se charge de pr\u00e9parer le corps pour les fun\u00e9railles.<\/p>\n

La revue The Lancet et les autorit\u00e9s sanitaires ont \u00e9tabli un lien entre cette pratique et un risque accru d'infection.<\/p>\n

\u201c Lorsqu\u2019un membre de la communaut\u00e9 tombe malade, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse d\u2019un membre de la famille ou d\u2019un ami proche, c\u2019est la femme qui vient \u00e0 son secours. Les femmes enceintes sont plus susceptibles d'\u00eatre infect\u00e9es en raison de leurs contacts avec les \u00e9tablissements de sant\u00e9, et selon l'Organisation mondiale de la sant\u00e9, deux des trois plus importantes \u00e9pid\u00e9mies d'Ebola ont \u00e9t\u00e9 li\u00e9es \u00e0 la transmission du virus dans les maternit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Acteurs cl\u00e9s de la r\u00e9ponse<\/h4>\n

Cependant, face \u00e0 ce tableau sombre, l\u2019\u00e9pid\u00e9miologiste Jack Canco tient \u00e0 souligner un autre aspect de la situation\u00a0: \u201d\u00a0Il est essentiel de rappeler que les femmes sont \u00e9galement des actrices cl\u00e9s de la riposte. Elles jouent un r\u00f4le crucial dans la sensibilisation de la communaut\u00e9 et dans l\u2019identification des sympt\u00f4mes.\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

Ce paradoxe est au c\u0153ur de la r\u00e9ponse sanitaire\u00a0: les femmes sont \u00e0 la fois les plus vuln\u00e9rables \u00e0 l\u2019infection et les plus efficaces pour enrayer la propagation de la maladie. Lors d\u2019\u00e9pid\u00e9mies pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes, en Sierra Leone et au Lib\u00e9ria, des r\u00e9seaux de femmes (des cheffes traditionnelles aux grands-m\u00e8res en passant par les associations communautaires) ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mobilis\u00e9s pour informer les populations, identifier les cas suspects et briser les cha\u00eenes de transmission.<\/p>\n

Face \u00e0 cette situation r\u00e9currente, ONU Femmes appelle \u00e0 un financement durable des organisations dirig\u00e9es par des femmes, au renforcement des soins de sant\u00e9 primaires et \u00e0 une participation accrue des femmes aux instances d\u00e9cisionnelles impliqu\u00e9es dans la riposte.<\/p>\n
