Ghana was plunged into mourning after the death of Suleiman Abdul Samad, known as the tallest man in the country, at the age of 33, following years of suffering from a rare genetic disease that caused his body to grow abnormally and greatly affected his health.
Suleiman gained widespread fame inside and outside Ghana after his story was published in the media, where he became a symbol of patience and willpower in the face of illness, and received great sympathy from citizens who followed his health journey over the past years.
A rare disease changed the course of his life
Suleiman’s suffering began in his early twenties, when he developed unusual symptoms, including a continuous increase in height and enlargement of parts of his body, before doctors discovered that he had Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects connective tissue and causes serious health complications involving bones, heart, and blood vessels.
As his health deteriorated, he began to suffer from difficulty moving and frequent pain, which forced him to give up many of his ambitions and rely on continuous medical care.
A long journey with treatment
Sulaiman received treatment at a number of medical centers, but his condition continued to deteriorate during the last few months, especially after he suffered complications in his legs that required his transfer to Tamale Teaching Hospital to receive the necessary care.
Before his death, he appealed for financial support to complete his treatment and undergo medical interventions that he urgently needed, which prompted many citizens to launch campaigns to support him, but his health condition did not improve until his death.
A human story that inspired many
Despite the health challenges he faced, Suleiman was known for his cheerful spirit and good relations with the people of his community. He was keen to spread messages calling for patience and coexistence with the disease. His story also contributed to raising awareness of rare genetic diseases and the importance of early diagnosis and providing health care for those affected by them.
Many believe that his fame was not only due to his exceptional height, but also to his ability to face his difficult circumstances with determination, which made him widely loved within Ghana.
Calls to improve care for patients with rare diseases
The death of Ghana's tallest man has once again highlighted the challenges faced by people with rare genetic diseases in Africa, particularly regarding access to specialized medical care and the high costs of treatment.
Experts are calling for increased attention to this category of patients, through improving diagnostic and treatment services, and providing psychological and social support, which will contribute to improving their quality of life and give them a better chance to cope with the complications of the disease.
