Egypt and Tanzania: Tangible progress in economic relations between the two countries

On Monday, June 1, Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad, met with Mahmoud Thabet Kombo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Republic of Tanzania, on the sidelines of the Korea-Africa Ministerial Meeting to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries and exchange views on issues of common interest.

Minister Abdel-Aati praised the growing momentum in bilateral relations, highlighting Egypt’s interest in strengthening economic, investment, trade and development relations between the two countries, in a way that achieves common interests and supports Tanzanian national efforts to advance the development process.

Tangible progress in Egyptian-Tanzania relations

The two ministers praised the tangible progress in economic and development relations between the two countries in recent times, stressing that the Julius Nyerere Dam project, implemented by Egyptian companies in Tanzania, represents a successful model of strategic partnership and developmental integration between the two countries, and a milestone in the course of bilateral relations.

The Tanzanian minister also praised the expertise of Egyptian companies operating in Tanzania, and their important role in implementing major national and development projects.

Regarding water security, Minister Abdel-Aty stressed the importance of cooperation and integration in the Nile River to achieve common benefit and mutual interests, highlighting the importance of adhering to the spirit of consensus and brotherhood to restore inclusiveness in the Nile Basin Initiative, and rejecting unilateral actions, welcoming the positive developments in the NBI initiative’s consultative process to restore inclusiveness in accordance with international law, in a way that achieves mutual benefit for all Nile Basin countries.

Meanwhile, Tanzania is nearing becoming an influential player in the global vital minerals market, following the announcement of the discovery of huge deposits of rare earth elements in the country's southern highlands, a move that could redraw the map of competition for strategic minerals within the African continent.
