The commander of the Somali National Army, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, discussed with the commander of the British TANGHAM operation in Somalia, Colonel Andy Seddon, ways to enhance military cooperation between the two countries, during a meeting held in the capital, Mogadishu.

The meeting addressed strengthening the support provided by the United Kingdom to the Somali army, particularly in the areas of training, capacity building and raising the efficiency of the armed forces.

As part of Operation Tangham, British forces are conducting advanced training programs for members of the Somali National Army in the city of Baidoa in the South West State of Somalia.

Cooperation with the Somali National Army

British forces also continue to cooperate with the Somali National Army and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) by providing specialized training in combating improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including detecting, dealing with, and dismantling mines and roadside bombs, as they remain one of the country’s most significant security challenges.

It should be noted that TANGHAM is the name given by the United Kingdom to its military mission in Somalia, and does not refer to an independent force or military formation.
