Abbas Sharaki: Increased water flow to the High Dam despite the slow discharge from the Ethiopian dam

Current water flow rate at the Ethiopian dam

Dr. Abbas Sharaki, Professor of Geology and Water Resources, said that the level of the Ethiopian dam's reservoir reached its highest point of 640 meters above sea level after the official opening on September 9, 2025, as water overflowed from the top of the dam through the middle spillway, provided the turbines are operated regularly throughout the year.

Turbine operating level of the Ethiopian dam

Sharaki added in a post on the social networking site Facebook: This level will gradually decrease from 640 to 565 m, which is the lowest level for operating the two low turbines that have been completely out of service since last June, or the lowest level for operating the eleven upper turbines, 595 m, while the lake will record on April 10, 2026, a level of 629 m, a decrease of only 11 m, equivalent to 17 billion m3, as a result of weak operation, and there are only a few weeks left until the start of the new year’s rains in next May.

Gradual reduction of part of the inventory in preparation for receiving the large revenue.

The professor of water resources added: It is supposed to be a gradual release of part of the reservoir in preparation for receiving the large inflow before August and September, as is happening in the Sudanese dams currently, so that it does not have to open a larger number of upper spillway gates during the heavy rains and the Nile flooding and drowning of Sudan is repeated as happened last year.

He continued: The current water flow rate at the Ethiopian dam is the lowest throughout the year, reaching 12 million m3/day, then it begins to increase with the start of the new season's rains to 21 and then 60 million m3/day in May and June, respectively.

The High Dam is currently experiencing an increase in the flow of the White Nile.

Sharaki concluded: The average rainfall for the current season on the equatorial plateau (March-June), including Lake Victoria, is above average so far, and it is expected to continue at this rate, God willing, until next June. Also, the High Dam is currently receiving an increase in the flow of the White Nile (from Lake Victoria and the Sobat River from Ethiopia) along with the water released from the Sudanese dams.
