Mohamed Ali Tall is a prominent political figure in Mali, having been a member of the M5-RFP movement that played a key role in the popular protests that ended with the overthrow of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
Despite his initial support for the military officers who seized power in 2020, he later distanced himself from the ruling military council and became one of its most prominent critics.
The crisis worsens after deadly attacks
His disappearance comes at a time when the ruling military council is facing an escalating crisis following widespread attacks targeting strategic sites in recent days in Bamako and the neighboring city of Kati.
These attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 23 people, according to local reports, including civilians and children, as announced by UNICEF.
Accusations within the army and political tension
The Malian prosecutor's office announced that it had "strong evidence" of the involvement of some military personnel in planning and coordinating the attacks, and also brought charges against exiled opposition politician Omar Mariko.
Tal serves as the defense lawyer for a number of military officers recently arrested on charges of attempting to destabilize state institutions. He also filed lawsuits challenging the military council's decision to dissolve political parties, which increases the sensitivity of the timing of his disappearance.
