A rapidly spreading cholera outbreak in the northeast Nigeria At least 74 people have been killed and more than 7,800 injured, according to Doctors Without Borders.
The outbreak, which began in early May in Borno State, is beginning to strain health facilities as new cases continue to rise daily.

Health officials have recorded nearly 8,000 suspected cases in 14 local government districts, putting additional strain on a health care system already struggling with years of conflict, displacement and poor access to clean water.

Doctors Without Borders said that hundreds of patients arrive at treatment centers every day, many suffering from severe dehydration after traveling long distances in search of care.
More than 500 cases were admitted in a single day last week, the highest daily number since the response began.
Authorities are now preparing for a vaccination campaign, while aid workers are expanding treatment, hygiene and disease surveillance efforts to prevent the outbreak from spreading further throughout the region.

Doctors Without Borders has set up several cholera treatment centers in the Nigerian state, and as of June 7, it had received a total of more than 7,400 patients.
On average, the organization's medical centers receive about 230 injured people daily.
At the end of May, the Russian Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare announced that no imported cases of cholera had been recorded in Russia. According to the agency, the global cholera situation remains unfavorable.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 78,000 cases of cholera have been recorded in 23 countries around the world, with the largest number of cases recorded in African countries.
Earlier, the Nigerian Ministry of Health announced 943 confirmed cases of cholera, 37 deaths, and more than 1,700 suspected cases, and the heavy rains that fell have worsened the situation.
