The Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Dr. Akol Paul Kordit, affirmed the party’s full readiness to contest the general elections scheduled for December 2026, considering them a fundamental step towards ending the transitional phase and strengthening political accountability.
Cordit's remarks came during his participation in a panel discussion entitled “Breaking the Cycle of Continued Transition in South Sudan,” organized by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in collaboration with the Center for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS), on Friday at the Palm Africa Hotel in Juba.
Structural imbalances
The Secretary-General of the SPLM said that the administrative structure in South Sudan, although designed to serve governance, is based in many aspects on ethnic grounds, which is exploited by political elites, creating structural imbalances in the political system.

He stressed that peace cannot be achieved using the tools of war, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms within the political parties that signed the Revitalized Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS), in order to consolidate political stability.
He added that the Popular Movement is ready to hold the elections on schedule next December, describing the electoral process as a means to "purify" the political scene and provide an opportunity to hold leaders accountable through the ballot box.
These statements come at a time when discussions are continuing between political parties and international partners regarding the completion of the necessary arrangements for holding elections that are the first since South Sudan's independence in 2011.
