The Union welcomed AfricanThe ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, announced earlier on Wednesday, was sponsored by Egypt, Turkey, and Pakistan, and is considered a positive development towards containing the escalation and opening the way for a more stable political path in the region.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, affirmed that this agreement reflects “responsible leadership and a shared commitment to reducing tensions,” noting that this step is in line with the Union’s positions calling for restraint and prioritizing peaceful solutions to international disputes.
The African official praised the role played by several regional parties in reaching this agreement, most notably the Sultanate of Oman, Turkey and Syria, stressing that the diplomatic efforts of these countries contributed effectively to creating the climate for reaching a truce.
Alleviating human and economic suffering
In a related context, the African Union pointed to the broad economic repercussions of the conflict, which were not limited to its direct parties, but extended to the African continent, especially with the disruptions in fuel supplies, rising inflation rates and increasing prices of basic commodities.
The head of the commission explained that the ceasefire represents a “crucial opportunity” to alleviate humanitarian and economic suffering, calling for building on this step by launching a comprehensive and sustainable dialogue that ensures lasting peace and prevents renewed tensions.
The African Union concluded its statement by affirming its full support for the Islamabad talks, stressing that adherence to the principles of the United Nations, foremost among them dialogue and diplomacy, remains the only viable way to resolve international crises and achieve global stability.
