The Hamer live in a semi-arid environment that imposes on them a lifestyle based on grazing and simple agriculture. Livestock, especially cows, represent the backbone of their local economy and social status.<\/p>\n

The tribe speaks a local language known as Hamer-Banna, which belongs to the Omotic language family. Their beliefs are based on traditional spirituality and the belief in nature spirits and hidden forces, in a cultural mix that reflects a long history of inherited traditions, with limited influences from surrounding religions.<\/p>\n

The ritual of passage to manhood: bull jumping<\/h2>\n

The most distinctive feature of the Hamer tribe is the \u201cbull jumping\u201d ritual, a courageous test that a young man undergoes to prove his worthiness to move from boyhood to manhood.<\/p>\n

The young man jumps naked over a row of bulls several times without falling. His success in this test gives him the right to marry, start a family and own cattle, and is considered a pivotal moment in his social life.<\/p>\n

The outward appearance of the Hamer reflects a strong cultural identity; the women braid their hair with layers of red clay and butter, and wear necklaces of beads and shells that indicate social status.<\/p>\n
