The major group of non-governmental organizations affiliated with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs returned to United Nations<\/a> Ayman Aqil was elected as the coordinator for the North Africa region for a new three-year term, with the aim of enhancing the participation of civil society organizations in sustainable development issues at the regional and international levels, via Zoom on Thursday, May 7, 2026.<\/p>\n

During the meeting in which he was inaugurated to begin his new term, Aqeel stressed that the next phase will focus on promoting the marketing of the group\u2019s work and activities to all civil society organizations in North Africa, in addition to raising awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals and mechanisms for effective participation in achieving them, in order to contribute to expanding the base of community participation in implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda within the African continent.<\/p>\n

Aqeel pointed out that, in his capacity as Vice President Economic and Social Council<\/a> The African Union\u2019s cultural affairs department will work during the coming period to build an institutional and coordination partnership between the African Economic and Social Council and the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which will contribute to strengthening the presence of African civil society organizations within international platforms concerned with sustainable development and human rights.<\/p>\n

Aqeel stressed the importance of involving civil society organizations in Africa in general, and North Africa in particular, in the work of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, stressing the need to support their participation in the Voluntary National Reviews on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, as a key mechanism to promote transparency, exchange experiences and support the efforts of African countries in achieving comprehensive and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

He added that strengthening the role of civil society in monitoring the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals is one of the main pillars for achieving fair and inclusive development, especially in light of the economic, social and environmental challenges facing the African continent.<\/p>\n
