Many motorists in the Federal Capital Territory expressed Nigeria<\/a>They expressed their dissatisfaction with the recent increase in the price of a liter of gasoline at the pump.<\/p>\n

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the price of gasoline at the pump was raised last Wednesday.<\/p>\n

This development has led to higher transportation costs, as well as exacerbating the daily suffering of the population.<\/p>\n

Fluctuating petrol prices exacerbate new hardships in Nigeria<\/h1>\n

NAN reported on Sunday in Abuja that many petrol stations that had been selling petrol between 1,261 and 1,295 naira had raised their prices to the new rate.<\/p>\n

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) is currently selling gasoline at 1,364 naira per liter, while MRS, BOVAS, AP (Ardova) and Mobil stations have raised their prices to between 1,364 and 1,370 naira per liter.<\/p>\n

Other stations such as AA Rano, Emedab, Empire Energy and Ranoil also sell gasoline at higher prices ranging between 1,370 and 1,444 naira per liter.<\/p>\n

Investigations by the NAN agency showed that the price of gasoline has increased several times this year, reaching nearly 900 naira per liter in February.<\/p>\n

Because of this situation, many private and commercial car owners parked their vehicles because they could not afford fuel costs, and the number of public vehicles in operation decreased significantly.<\/p>\n

Many passengers, including government employees, were seen stuck at various bus stations during the week due to a lack of transportation and high prices.<\/p>\n

The fuel crisis is worsening in Nigeria.<\/h1>\n

Some drivers who spoke to NAN expressed their sadness, calling on the federal government to intervene to address the instability of fuel prices and ease the burden on citizens.<\/p>\n

A government employee named Ms. Zainab Idris said that the suffering had become unbearable.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cThe suffering is immense. Sometimes I don\u2019t go to work because there is no money for transportation, and even food has become an even bigger problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The government called for intervention, saying: \u201cI believe that if the price of fuel stabilizes, the prices of goods and services will stabilize for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201dEvery time you go to the market to buy groceries, you find that prices have gone up, and this shouldn\u2019t be happening in our country. Anything that goes up rarely goes down.\u201d<\/p>\n

She noted that many government employees, due to economic conditions, have converted their cars into commercial vehicles known locally as \u201ccabo-cabos\u201d to earn money.<\/p>\n

She said she often takes taxis because they are relatively cheaper as drivers try to cover fuel costs.<\/p>\n

Another government employee, Abdullah Baba, said he has been arriving late to work since the price increase, because transportation costs have gone up and do not decrease even after any adjustment.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI have a car, but I can\u2019t afford the high cost of fuel. Using public transport has become more feasible, and many people are in this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed out that there are many passengers at bus stations but not enough cars, because the business is no longer profitable for drivers.<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cWe know that this is not the government\u2019s doing, but it must work on a plan to solve the problem and avoid further crises.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ali Hassan, a business owner in the Garki market, said that the fuel price increase was affecting his business.<\/p>\n

He explained that the high transportation costs will make food products more expensive, because everyone is trying to make a profit.<\/p>\n

He added that traders are now incurring higher transportation costs, which shifts the burden to consumers and makes basic goods less affordable for low-income families.<\/p>\n

One logistics operator, Mr. Imka Obi, said that the heavy reliance on fuel makes drivers vulnerable to frequent financial shocks.<\/p>\n

He called for investment in alternative energy and mass transit systems, noting that introducing affordable public transport or encouraging compressed natural gas (CNG) or electric vehicles would help stabilize the sector and ease the burden on operators and passengers.<\/p>\n

Businessman Imka Ozu said that eliminating fuel subsidies without proper plans has affected the oil sector and the economy.<\/p>\n

He added:
\n\u201cThe dollar is constantly rising, and this makes it difficult for importers and traders to buy gasoline, because they have to sell immediately after buying to make a profit.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cIf the government is not prepared to put in place a permanent policy, it must reinstate subsidies because citizens are suffering greatly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the market is unstable and that the suffering is worsening daily.<\/p>\n

Another government employee, Benson Harrison, said that some compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles are still charging high transportation prices, which is unfair.<\/p>\n

He explained: \u201cCNG cars are supposed to be cheaper, but drivers are taking advantage of the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he recently ordered a taxi and found that it ran on gas, but it charged the same price.<\/p>\n

The driver told him he should cancel the trip if he didn't like the price, calling on the relevant authorities to monitor drivers.<\/p>\n

He noted that some CNG vehicles that were subsidized by the government had stickers on them, but these were removed to enable drivers to charge higher prices.<\/p>\n

A taxi driver named Gbenga Emmanuel said the situation has become complicated, with drivers suffering from high fuel and food prices.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI am operating at a loss now because I am buying fuel at a high price, and if I raise the fare, passengers may not be able to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cWe know that employee salaries have not been raised as promised by the government, so we are trying to be understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that his family depends on his daily income, and that things have become extremely difficult.<\/p>\n

Fuel market liberalization in Nigeria sparks controversy and deepens the cost-of-living crisis<\/h1>\n

He said: \u201cThis increase is affecting everything, even house rent and school fees have gone up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president called for urgent intervention.<\/p>\n

A driver who works for Bolt and Uber, Bessie Ajay, said that the difficult economic conditions were exacerbated by rising fuel prices.<\/p>\n

He added that there was no longer any profit in the business, and that he was working at a loss just to survive.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cPeople are no longer asking for cars, they prefer to go to bus stations. I think I will go home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hajia Hafsat Omar, a retired government employee, called on the government to strengthen the country's compressed natural gas project to reduce transportation costs.<\/p>\n

She said that excessive reliance on gasoline increases the scarcity of the product and raises its price, and that the spread of CNG will make fuel cheaper.<\/p>\n

She added that converting cars to CNG is expensive, calling on the government to make it affordable for everyone.<\/p>\n

She also called for the implementation of health insurance and support programs for retirees, noting that retirees are more affected by the crisis.<\/p>\n

She said she is a widow and that she and her children cannot meet their basic needs.<\/p>\n

Ibrahim Osman, a vegetable vendor in the Wossi market, said that the goods that arrived at his shop had increased in price by more than 100,000 naira, and that demand was weak.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cVegetables cannot be stored for a long time, and people are not buying because of the high prices.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cIf the goods spoil, I will stop selling because I borrowed money to buy them.\u201d<\/p>\n

For her part, an official from the Independent Petroleum Products Distributors Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) said that the increase and decrease in fuel prices is due to market liberalization.<\/p>\n

She explained that the dynamics of supply and demand depend on market liberalization.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cWhen the market is liberalized, prices cannot be controlled at any specific time, because they are affected by internal and external factors, especially crude oil prices and the exchange rate in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n
