Senegalese President Bassirou Diom\u00e8ne Faye began an official visit to Mali, where he held talks with the head of the transitional phase, Colonel Assimi Go\u00efta, in a move that reflects the two countries' keenness to strengthen bilateral relations and confront the common challenges facing the West African region.<\/p>\n

The visit comes amid complex security conditions in the Sahel region, as well as the need to develop economic cooperation and improve trade and transport between the two countries, especially since Mali relies heavily on the port of Dakar to import a large part of its needs.<\/p>\n

Security is at the forefront of the discussions.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The talks between the two sides focused on developments in the security situation in the Sahel region, in light of the continued attacks carried out by armed groups in a number of areas within Mali, and the threat they pose to regional stability.<\/p>\n

The two sides also discussed ways to enhance military cooperation and the exchange of security information, as well as coordinating efforts to address security challenges affecting the movement of people and goods between countries in the region.<\/p>\n

West African governments are seeking to strengthen security cooperation to counter escalating threats, particularly in border areas where militant groups are increasingly active.<\/p>\n

Transportation and trade are among the priorities of the visit.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Land transport and trade received considerable attention during the visit, as Mali, a landlocked country, relies on the port of Dakar as a major outlet for its imports and exports.<\/p>\n

Over the past few months, transport routes between the two countries have been disrupted by armed attacks targeting some vital routes, which has affected the movement of goods and supply chains, prompting both sides to explore mechanisms to ensure the smooth flow of trade and secure transport routes.<\/p>\n

Relations between Mali and Senegal<\/span><\/h4>\n

Mali and Senegal have close historical ties, bound by geographical, cultural and economic links. The two countries also cooperate on a number of regional issues related to security, development and economic integration.<\/p>\n

Observers believe the visit reflects a shared desire to maintain channels of dialogue and enhance bilateral cooperation, despite the political changes that West Africa has witnessed in recent years.<\/p>\n
